What is a Paralegal?
In Ontario, a paralegal is a licensed legal professional who provides a range of legal services within the limited scope of their practice. Paralegals are trained to handle specific legal tasks such as representing clients in Small Claims Court, Provincial Offences Court (where traffic tickets are handled), and Tribunals, drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, and offering general legal advice within their authorized areas of practice. To practice as a paralegal in Ontario, individuals must complete an accredited paralegal education program, pass the licensing exam administered by the Law Society of Ontario, and adhere to certain professional and ethical standards.
